Anyone can draw a line and label it “10 cm.” canvasxdraw does more: it creates a live dimension object that measures, displays, and updates according to real industry standards — ANSI, DIN, BS-380, ISO, or JIS. That means your drawings hold up to scrutiny from engineers, regulators, and clients who check every number, not just the ones that look right.
The dimensioning toolset
All of canvasxdraw’s dimensioning tools live in a single palette, so you’re never hunting through menus mid-drawing. Here’s what’s available:
Linear (horizontal, vertical, oblique) measures the straight-line distance between two points. This is your everyday dimensioning tool, and the type of dimension it creates adjusts automatically based on where you move the cursor.
Chain creates a series of connected measurements in a row — useful for dimensioning a sequence of features along one edge, like a row of mounting holes.
Baseline creates a series of measurements that all originate from one common starting point, which is the standard way to show how far several features sit from a single reference edge.
Angle measures the angle between two lines.
Perpendicular measures the distance from a line to a point, at a right angle.
Object Side measures a side of an object directly.
Radius, Diameter, and Center mark and measure arcs and ovals, including the center point.
Area and Perimeter calculate and display the size or boundary length of a selected object.
Step-by-step: adding your first dimension
- Open the Dimensioning tool palette and select Linear.
- Move your cursor into the drawing — canvasxdraw will prompt you for the first point.
- Click the start point, then click the end point. The dimension type (horizontal, vertical, or oblique) follows your cursor’s angle automatically.
- Click a third time to anchor the dimension object in place.
Chain and Baseline dimensions follow the same first two steps, but instead of anchoring once, you keep clicking additional points to add more measurements to the same object, then press Esc when you’re finished. A single Chain or Baseline object can hold up to 16 measurements — handy for dimensioning an entire row of features in one pass instead of repeating the process for each one.
Getting the details right
Once a dimension object exists, the Properties bar gives you full control over how it looks and behaves:
Units and precision let each dimension object use its own unit of measurement (independent of the document default) and its own decimal precision — from none up to six decimals, or fractions.
Tolerance adds bilateral (± value) or unilateral (+value/-value) tolerance text automatically, which matters for anything that needs to meet a manufacturing spec.
Prefix and postfix let you label values clearly — for example, adding “R” after a radius measurement.
Arrows, witness lines, and leaders control the visual presentation, with Auto settings that handle most cases without manual adjustment.
Standard lets you apply ANSI, DIN, BS-380, ISO, or JIS formatting in one click — or define and save your own custom standard if your workflow calls for something specific.
Auto Dimensioning: the fast path
If you’re dimensioning ovals, rectangles, or rounded rectangles, you don’t need to draw a dimension manually at all. Select the object, then choose an option from the Auto Dimensioning menu (or Object > Auto Dimensioning) — Linear, Angle, Area, Perimeter, Radius, or Diameter, depending on what the object supports. canvasxdraw generates the dimension object instantly.
Keeping dimensions in sync
By default, dimension objects (other than Linear, Object Side, and Linear Auto Dimensioning) don’t automatically resize if you change the object they’re measuring. To keep a dimension linked to its object, select both the dimension and the measured object, then choose Object > Group. Resize the group, and the dimension updates with it — no manual re-measuring required.
Editing and cleaning up
To move a dimension, double-click it and drag it to the new position. To delete one, select the Direct Group Selection tool, click the dimension, and press Delete. Both are quick enough to do mid-drawing without breaking your flow.
