canvasxdraw ships with a rich symbol library packed with hundreds of ready-to-use symbols spanning multiple industries. But your projects don’t always fit inside someone else’s symbol set. That’s why canvasxdraw also lets you build your own symbols from scratch and drop them straight into the library, right alongside the built-in set.
In this episode, the Vector GFX team walks through exactly how to do it, using a real-world example: turning a release valve object into a reusable, named symbol ready for a piping and instrumentation diagram (P&ID).

- Start with any object you want to reuse. You can turn a single vector object, a group of vector objects, or a composite object into a symbol — in the video, that’s a release valve.
- Drag it into the Symbol Library. Click and drag your object into the location where you want it to live in the library.
- Name it and tag it. Give your new symbol a custom name and add any keywords that will help you (or your team) find it later.
- Confirm the name is unique, then click OK. This locks your symbol into the library for future use.
- Drop it into your workspace anytime. Click and drag the symbol out of the library and onto the canvas whenever you need it — like placing that release valve directly into a P&ID drawing.
One detail worth calling out: because your custom symbol lives in the library, it behaves just like canvasxdraw’s built-in symbols. Update the master symbol, and every instance placed in your document updates right along with it — a small habit that saves real time on large, symbol-heavy drawings.
