We know our audience doesn’t need convincing prose about how great a piece of software is. You want to know how something actually works, whether it holds up under real conditions, and what happens when it doesn’t. So that’s what September is about.
What We’re Covering
This month, we’re running eight posts split across two connected threads:
- Format and interoperability deep dives. Real, specific breakdowns of how technical illustration data moves between formats and tools. This includes DXF/DWG import fidelity, CGM support, what happens to your data structure when a file changes hands. Not “we support 100+ formats” as a bullet point, but what that support means in practice, where it typically breaks, and why.
- Standards and compliance explainers. ANSI, ISO, DIN, JIS. The dimensioning and documentation standards technical illustrators are expected to work within, but that rarely get explained clearly anywhere. We’ll break down what these standards require, where documentation commonly fails review, and how tolerance and dimensioning get misrepresented when graphics aren’t built with the standard in mind.
Both threads come from the same place: technical documentation fails quietly, usually not because someone didn’t care, but because a format conversion silently dropped data, or a standard wasn’t fully understood. We’d rather talk about that directly than pretend it doesn’t happen.
Coming Up First: What Really Happens When a File Changes Formats
Our first deep dive looks at file interoperability, specifically, what happens structurally when a technical illustration moves from one format to another. Curves get re-approximated when the target format doesn’t support the same path math. Layers flatten when the destination format has no concept of them. Text sometimes survives as text, and sometimes gets silently converted to outlines. And metadata, the hotspots, part IDs, and attributes your downstream workflow may depend on — is the layer most likely to disappear without any visual sign that it’s gone. We’ll walk through each of these, plus why something as specific as a coordinate precision setting in CGM export can matter more than people expect.
