Episode 9: Smart Tools

This episode, the Vector GFX team shows you Smart Snaps. This is a fast way to get objects perfectly aligned and evenly distributed without measuring or eyeballing a thing.

What You’ll Learn

Alignment is one of those small details that quietly signals a polished illustration from a sloppy one. canvasxdraw’s Smart Snaps generate guidelines automatically as you align objects, so you can see exactly when things line up. There is no manual measuring, no guesswork.

Quick Recap: Aligning Objects

1. Select your objects. With even a handful of shapes on the canvas, alignment options become available.

2. Choose an alignment. Center align, left align, and right align are all one click away, with guidelines appearing automatically to confirm the result.

3. Align vertically too. Top align, bottom align, and even aligning to the page itself work the same way.

4. Watch for distribution guides. When you vertically align a group of three or more objects, canvasxdraw shows guides for equal distribution, so spacing between objects stays even automatically.

Where to Find These Tools

Prefer working from a palette instead of the toolbar? Go to Window > Palettes > Align to access the same tools. Use vertical and horizontal alignment, plus vertical and horizontal distribution,  all in one place.

Why It’s Worth Knowing

Manually nudging objects into place eats time and rarely produces a truly even result. Smart Snaps turn alignment and distribution into a one-click decision, which matters most when you’re arranging repeated elements such as labels, callouts, symbols, and icons.  This is where consistency is what makes an illustration look intentional rather than assembled in a hurry.
